The Juliana Pig is a small colorful pig thought to originate in Europe through selective breeding of various kinds of pigs. The Juliana Pig, also known as the Miniature Painted Pig, is small, spotted, and conformationally sound. It should not exhibit a pronounced pot belly or sway back, should have a longer snout, and be slight in frame. Temperament is of the utmost importance since the Juliana has been specifically bred to work with humans.
Pigs are noted as the 5th most intelligent animal in the world. Studies have shown that their intelligence ranks about that of a two-year-old child. They're easily trainable, compassionate, have a high ability to focus, great memories, are sensitive and can feel grief...and throw tantrums! The Juliana is a great option for families that might have allergies to standard pets. They learn commands, can be litterbox/house-trained and are excellent cuddlers!
Reputable breeders will be upfront about the misconception of a minipig breed. There is no such thing as a "mini", "micro", "toy", "teacup", or any other descriptor of pig. Any pig less than 350 pounds is considered a minipig. That's still pretty big! Julianas tend to be the smallest of these "minipigs" and the KuneKune is the largest. However, as with any other animal (or human!) overfeeding and underactivity will lead to an overweight and larger-than-expected piggie. Julianas are not done growing until they reach five years old. At one year of age, a Juliana will be at approximately half its full-grown size. By year three, they are 90% grown and spend the next two years filling out that last 10%. The best way to tell how big your Juliana will be is to look at its parents. A full-grown, healthy Juliana will never fit in your shoulder bag, but if cared for and fed properly, it will mature to about the size of a terrier dog. They will, however, weigh more as they are beefy, stout creatures.
Fully grown, your healthy Juliana should be between 10-16" at its shoulders and 25-55 pounds. There is never a guarantee of the size however.
